RECLAIM IT, THEN BENCH IT

My dear friend Currie has an amazing store in Austin called Spartan.  I have been thinking about this bench she had in her shop to use as a display table for over a year now.  She had it made by a friend in NY,  the design was super simple, and I had always wanted to make one for myself.  Last week I turned my thoughts into matter.

I went to the wood reclaimer, about half an hour outside of LA, and chose a 3" x 10" piece of cedar saved from a burned patch of trees that had been in a forest fire.   I had it cut into a 6' slab, and kept a tiny end cut to make a petite nature shelf.  I hauled my load back home, and sanded that mother for 3 nights.  I stained it with linseed oil and waxed it.  Then I screwed on legs that I found on the world wide web.  You can find Spartan on the same web, and you should.

My bench rules.  My kid thinks so too.  The silk pajamas are a story for another day...

EARTH DAY

In honor of Earth day,  amongst other things we shall discuss shortly, we left the car in the driveway and took the train to downtown LA for a Friday night out.  The sun was setting, the air was crisp, and I was  enchanted by how great LA looked from this vantage point.  It was perfect.  Then I ran to catch the connecting train, slipped, and cracked the heel off of my vintage Hermes sandal.  Fugh.

APRIL 26, 2007

I got married four years ago, yesterday.  The memories make me belly laugh.  One week in the Rainforest with 24 of my nearest and dearest.  We chilled, we swam, we surfed, we danced, we made music, we laughed, we hiked, we chilled some more, and we sweated... oh did we sweat.  I am reminded to live fully each and everyday.  I am also reminded of rum shooters.

Jump! For my love

Olivia Ramsay is a big fan of JK.  I am a big fan of hers.  She is a dancer.  She just ordered the Penny colored knot top for spring.  Made me think of these images of the JK black silk bloomers she ordered a few springs back.  Here she is looking amazing in said bloomers, with Ikolo Griffin.  Photographed by Weiferd Watts.

Ich liebe Dieter Rams

I love Dieter Rams.  He is a german industrialist after my own heart.  These are the music machines for me.  "Good design is unobtrusive"- Dieter  Rams.

Behind the scenes

This morning there was a photo shoot at the house for an upcoming press piece.  A little man joined me for a minute.  Makes me think of Boy George and a small farmer having a tender moment in the wood shop.

Panama Accessories

An editor was recently asking me about my favorite things to wear in Panama.  Here are my picks from our latest trip!

My woven Panama hat with a crocodile band salvaged from an old Aussie wool work hat.  Rad Alyson Fox necklace.  Love!  She and I traded for some art and other bootie.  My favorite cotton scarf made by YSL... on the head or worn wet around the neck on a sweltering day in the Jungle.  The tassel earrings I bought from a Rasta in Bocas town for $5 each.  Rachel Comey cutout loafers.  Vintage Vans for max comfort.
